(Nikkei Asia) South Korean private equity fund 'may consider' TaylorMade Golf sale

SEOUL -- The CEO of South Korea-based private equity fund Centroid Investment Partners says he may weigh the possible sale of TaylorMade Golf, depending on the performance of the U.S.-based company's apparel business that has a tie-up with golf legend Tiger Woods. Jeong Jin-hyeok told Nikkei Asia that he is satisfied with TaylorMade's golf ball business as it has grown more than 20% on average per year since Centroid's acquisition of the company in 2021, while noting that he will be monitoring how its clothing operations perform throughout 2025.

Centroid Investment Partners has quietly become a major player in the golfing industry, a rise marked by last week’s announcement by TaylorMade of a new clothing line with Tiger Woods. Founder Jinhyeok Jeong is already looking for his next deal. Centroid — which bought TaylorMade in 2021 — is currently raising a $500 million fund, and is in the early stage of reviewing a US company for acquisition, potentially worth over $1 billion, he said in an interview.

In 2020, when the pandemic shut down most sports, one old-fashioned sport saw a record number of new people taking up the game: Golf. More than 3 million people in the U.S. played golf for the first time in 2020, according to the Florida-based National Golf Foundation. The previous record high was in 2000, when golfing great Tiger woods (who became a billionaire last year) was at the height of his popularity. And golfers played more rounds—some 60 million more—than they had the year before. Overall equipment sales also increased by 10% compared with 2019, per Golf Datatech.
